Reece James has been tipped to join Manchester City if Chelsea fail to ‘bounce back’ and ‘fight for honours across all fronts’. The Blues failed to secure Champions League qualification last season, finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Now under new management and following significant funding, Chelsea currently sitss 10th with just 16 points after 13 games. While the the top-four isn’t entirely out of the picture, Mauricio Pochettino has been tasked with the difficult job of transforming the west Londoners’ fortunes.

However, if the former Tottenham manager cannot guide Chelsea back to the glory days, then the club risks losing some big names. One player who would face an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge if the Blues continue to miss out on European football is Reece James, according to Glen Johnson.

Speaking to GGRecon, the former Chelsea defender said: “If Reece James were to ever leave Chelsea for a Premier League rival, then it would definitely be for Manchester City. I can’t imagine him going to a fellow London team, and it would be Manchester City, purely because they’ll be competing at the very top for years to come.

“Players want to win things, so those links would definitely grab his attention. Chelsea wouldn’t want him to leave; the price tag would be astronomical, and that’s what’s going to make this move very unlikely.

“In terms of the player himself, of course, if Chelsea don’t bounce back and get to the point again where they’re fighting for honours across all fronts, then of course the move to Manchester City will pique his interest.

“All the best players want to win things and play for the best team, so I can see Reece James wanting to move to Manchester City, but not to any other Premier League team.”

James, who sees his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in 2028, has been briefly linked with a move to Real Madrid over the years after initially catching Carlo Ancelotti’s eye. During Thomas Tuchel’s tenure in west London, he played a major role in one of the most successful periods in the Blues’ history, winning the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

On the West Londoners’ road to becoming European champions, Chelsea defeated Real Madrid in the semi-final, and James certainly left his mark. Then, a year later, the two sides met again in the Champions League quarterfinal.

Reports from Spain later suggested that Los Blancos’ scouts and technical staff were impressed by the England international and noted him as a potential replacement for Dani Carvajal one day. For now, it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid are still interested in James, but they could face competition from City for his signature one day.
