Chelsea aren’t expected to spend as much in the January transfer window as they did last year, yet there is still plenty of life in the rumour mill. The Blues have been heavily linked with numerous big names this month, including the likes of Victor Osimhen, Michael Olise, and Karim Benzema.

The Premier League is clamping down on finance-related rule breaks, so if Chelsea want some new faces around Stamford Bridge, then they may need to offload some players. Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja, in particular, face uncertain futures, with each of their potential departures going down as ‘pure profit’ on the books. With that being said, the West Londoners have just a few days left to wrap up any business before the window slams shut. So, football.london has taken a look at some of the biggest Blues stories on Sunday, January 28.

Olise update

Chelsea remain interested in signing Michael Olise in the summer transfer window, football.london understands. However, it’s believed the Crystal Palace winger would favour a move to Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag also interested.

Despite being at Chelsea from the age of seven to 14, Olise has always been an avid Red Devils supporter. The 22-year-old is aware of interest from the Blues and United and is widely expected to leave Palace at the end of the season. Chelsea activated Olise’s £35 million release clause last summer, and the winger looked set to move to Stamford Bridge.

However, Olise then penned a new four-year contract at Selhurst Park. Olise now has a new release clause in his latest contract with the Eagles that becomes active this summer. The exact figure of the clause remains unknown at this stage, though, but is expected to be considerably more than £35 million.

Chelsea urged to sign Wilson

Darren Bent has urged Chelsea to sign Callum Wilson this month, with Mauricio Pochettino eager to further bolster his squad. The Newcastle United striker has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge recently as the Magpies look to raise funds in order to operate in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa striker said, “I really like Callum Wilson. Big fan of his Whenever he seems to play, he always seems to score. I think he would fit well for both clubs (Chelsea and West Ham).

“If either side can get him, I think it works really well. I don’t know why I’m leaning more towards West Ham; maybe because of where they are… Both clubs he’s going to start. If he goes to West Ham, he will start. If he goes to Chelsea, he will start.”

football.london says: If I were Todd Boehly, I would steer clear of Wilson—unless Chelsea can sign him on loan. Given his incredibly worrying injury record, the risk is far greater than the reward here. If the Blues want a short-term fix, then just go out and get Karim Benzema instead.

Caicedo to Barcelona…

It has been revealed that Barcelona wanted to sign Moises Caicedo in the summer. The 22-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with several top clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, before eventually deciding to join Chelsea.

However, it could have been all so different had Barcelona not been restricted by Financial Fair Play regulations. In an interview with Spanish publication AS, Caicedo’s agent revealed that his client courted the interest of the Spanish giants, but a ‘complicated issue’ stopped a move from materialising.

“Yes, Barça asked. Barça asked, but it was an inaccessible subject for them. It was clear. In the end, with the Fair Play issue and so on, it was a complicated issue,” said Manuel Sierra. “But yes, they did ask us, and well, that’s where it stayed. There was no official offer; there were only soundings. The normal thing in the markets.”
