After Jurgen Klopp gave his notice, Mike Gordon, president of Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group, called Edwards over the weekend to bring up the idea of him taking on a more senior role to oversee the club’s reorganization. This was written about in Monday’s Transfer Confidential column.
But Edwards wants to try new things and doesn’t want to go back to Anfield, even though he cares about the club.Chelsea and Manchester United have been interested in the 44-year-old since he finally left Liverpool in May 2022 and was replaced by Julian Ward, who used to be his assistant.
He said at the time, “I had always planned to stay at the club for no more than 10 years.” I’ve loved working here, but I think things should change. When it comes to work, I think it’s good for both the employee and the boss. Many things have changed (hopefully for the better) since I’ve been here. But a new person comes in with fresh ideas and a different point of view, and they may be able to build on (or change) what was already in place.
“That’s how I think businesses and football teams stay ahead; you have to change.”It is thought that Edwards would like a different job if he went back to a football club. Liverpool knows this and is still looking for a new sports director. This person would have worked under Edwards, but now Jorg Schmadtke has also said he is leaving the club.
Edwards took a break after leaving Liverpool, but he is now working with Ian Graham, who used to be the club’s research expert, to start a data consulting business called Ludonautics. They are already helping teams like Bolton Wanderers.
